Sydney City Chocolates Review

Last week, I met Phyllys from Sydney City Chocolates for a coffee in the Strand Arcade. She very generously gave me this gift box with these 7 gorgeous chocolate bars, which I shared with my partner and his family on Mother’s Day:

Spencer Cocoa Milk Chocolate

  • 42% cocoa.
  • Grown in Vanuatu and made in Mudge, NSW, Australia.
  • They buy the beans direct from a small group of families on the island of Malekula, in Vanuatu, and visit twice a year to pick the best beans.
  • Despite being the only ‘plain’ milk chocolate (ie – nothing else was added), this was my favourite by far! It has a malted, ovaltiney taste, due to the Bundaberg raw sugar.

Monsieur Truffle Milk Chocolate with Caramel Specks

  • 38% cocoa.
  • Grown in Venezuela and made in Melbourne, VIC, Australia.
  • This was a very close second favourite and the first bar to disappear! Despite the caramel (which is homemade), it was not too sweet and tasted similar to salted caramel. And what’s not to like about salted caramel?!

Divine Milk Chocolate with Toffee & Seasalt

  • 38% cocoa.
  • Grown in Ghana and made in Germany for a UK company.
  • Fairtrade (which signifies fairer trade conditions between the chocolate company and the farmers, thus providing more capcity for disadvantaged producers to combat poverty and take more control over their future).
  • This bar is extremely yummy too. It is very creamy, and balances the sweetness of the tofee with the seasalt perfectly.

Sead and Bean Organic Rich Milk Chocolate with Tangerine

  • 37% cocoa.
  • Grown in Brazil and made in the UK.
  • Fairtrade (which signifies fairer trade conditions between the chocolate company and the farmers, thus providing more capcity for disadvantaged producers to combat poverty and take more control over their future).
  • Seed and Bean have also received a 100% ethical accreditation from the Ethical Company Organisation.
  • It tastes similar to Terry’s Chocolate Orange (which I love), but like there are real pieces of tangerine in it. It is slightly dry though, and certainly not as milky as Dairy Milk.

Bahen & Co Almond & Seasalt

  • 70% cocoa.
  • Grown and made in Margaret River, WA, Australia.
  • This was my favourite dark chocolate bar. If you are a dark chocolate connoisseur, you will love this combination of Australian almonds, organic cane sugar, Margaret River olive oil and Maldon sea salt.

Bahen & Co Cracked Coffee

  • 70% cocoa.
  • Grown in Brazil and made in Margaret River, WA, Australia.
  • I found this very bitter, but I do have a sweet tooth and it would go beautifully with a Flat White. The cacao and coffee beans, both from Brazil, match perfectly.

Divine Dark Chocolate with Raspberries

  • 70% cocoa.
  • Grown in Ghana and made in Germany for a UK company.
  • Fairtrade (which signifies fairer trade conditions between the chocolate company and the farmers, thus providing more capcity for disadvantaged producers to combat poverty and take more control over their future).
  • Personally, this was my least favourite as I found the chocolate a bit dry. However, as I mentioned above I have a very sweet tooth, so if you love raspberries and dark chocolate, this could be right up your street!

Their website is currently under construction. Please contact me if you would like to make an order. Phyllys is offering my clients 4 bars (2 milk and 2 dark) for just $30 including GST – this is cheaper than wholesale!
